That Was Then, This is Now
(A Creative Evolution)

Almost exactly 13 years ago I wrote a blog post chronicling the re-emergence of an old passion, after gifting myself a new Canon digital camera to replace my old 35mm which had long since passed into the realm Where Broken Things Go. I also gifted myself a new macro lens to explore a form of photography I had always been captivated by.

Looking back at those early photographs gave me a chuckle, reminding me of the time I came across the first bracelets I had ever made, and I remember how proud of them I had been at the time. Don’t get me wrong – they weren’t hideous. I had the design composition down pretty well, but the implementation lacked the skill that had grown through the years. Was crude, even, to my now-refined eye. Still. We have to start somewhere, right?

And so it tickled me to find all of these old photos, contained within an equally ancient blog. Like those old pieces of jewelry, they are a testament to the power of starting one’s journey – any journey – somewhere (ANYwhere) and moving forward. They are a testament to growth. That journey will never be perfect and, in fact, will probably be FAR from it when rubber first meets the road, but practice coupled with perseverance goes a long way towards getting you as close to it as you can possibly be (and if you are the stubborn sort, like me, this is the *perfect* place to channel it to your greatest good). Don’t let discouragement with your first attempts at something dissuade you from your intended destination. If you had had that sort of attitude as a baby, first starting life out, you would probably still be sitting in diapers on the floor.
And yes, this is a metaphor for anything in life.

So, if starting from right where you are in pursuit of that passion you’ve had niggling at your soul seems daunting, and as though it will take forever to get where you want to be, I can assure you that it WILL be forever if you don’t just choose to start from right where you are. No day is ever given and it would be such a shame never to let that light of yours shine on the world.
Namaste’,
